Early Contractor Involvement with CIVILCO

You have a slip to repair, a retaining wall to build or a challenging civil construction project to tackle. Getting a structural design completed might seem like the obvious first step. But who is checking how that design will actually be built, and whether it will fit your budget?

At CIVILCO, we encourage clients to involve us before the structural design is completed. Through our Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) service, we work with you and the design consultants to shape a solution around the realities of your site, your project goals and your construction budget.

As an engineer-led civil contractor, we bring engineering understanding and practical construction experience to the same conversation. That means buildability and cost can guide the design from the outset.

What is Early Contractor Involvement?

ECI brings the contractor into the planning and design stage, before the construction scope and price are finalised.

Instead of waiting for completed drawings and then pricing what has been designed, we help develop the brief, assess construction options and provide cost feedback as the design progresses. Depending on the agreed scope, we can coordinate the relevant consultants and guide their work around a clear set of project requirements.

The structural, geotechnical and other specialist consultants retain responsibility for their professional advice and designs. Our role is to bring the construction perspective into that process early, so the proposed solution is practical to deliver as well as technically appropriate.

A design that works on your site

Every site has constraints that can influence the cost and complexity of construction. Access for machinery, working space, sloping ground, nearby buildings, existing services, drainage and the removal of excavated material can all affect how the work is carried out.

For slip repairs and retaining walls, the sequence of construction and temporary support requirements can be particularly important. A completed wall design is only part of the picture; we also need to understand how to build it safely within the available space.

By considering these issues during design, CIVILCO can help the consultants develop details and construction arrangements that suit the site. This can reduce the need for late revisions when construction planning reveals a practical problem.

Value engineering: making the design simpler to build

Value engineering means reviewing how a project can achieve its required outcome more efficiently, while maintaining the necessary safety, performance and durability.

Sometimes the opportunity lies in the overall repair approach. In other cases, it may involve simplifying a detail, selecting a more practical construction method, using readily available materials or changing the sequence of work.

As an engineer-led contractor, we can discuss those opportunities with the designers and explain their ef

fect on construction. We understand how design decisions translate into machinery requirements, labour, temporary works and time on site.

Our aim is to avoid unnecessary complexity and focus spending where it delivers value. Any proposed change still needs the appropriate consultant review and approval.

Keeping your budget in the conversation

Your budget should help inform the design brief from the beginning.

Through ECI, we provide construction cost feedback as options are developed. This helps you and the consultants understand the financial implications of key decisions before committing to a completed design.

Where an option is likely to exceed the available budget, we can explore alternatives, clarify priorities and consider whether a different scope or staged approach is feasible. It is a chance to make informed decisions while there is still room to adapt.

An early estimate will develop as investigations and design work resolve the unknowns. ECI cannot guarantee that every project will fit its initial budget, but it gives the team an opportunity to address cost pressures earlier and reduce the risk of paying for a design that needs substantial reworking.

A fixed ECI fee, fully credited towards construction

Every CIVILCO ECI client receives a fixed fee proposal for an agreed scope, giving you certainty about the cost of our early involvement.

If you appoint CIVILCO for the construction phase, we credit our ECI fee in full against your construction contract. You receive the benefit of our engineering understanding, construction planning and design input from the outset, with the full ECI fee credited towards your project when you build with us.

More clarity before construction

Early involvement also helps establish what needs to happen before work starts.

Depending on the project, this can include identifying further investigations, clarifying consultant responsibilities, considering consent requirements and planning access, procurement and construction sequencing.

For clients, the benefits can include:

  • Better-informed decisions: compare options with an understanding of their likely cost and construction implications.

  • Earlier identification of risks: recognise ground, access, drainage and temporary works issues before they become problems on site.

  • Less avoidable redesign: give consultants practical feedback while the design is still developing.

  • A clearer scope: understand what is included, what remains uncertain and what further information is needed for pricing.

  • Better coordination: connect the consultant’s design decisions with the contractor’s delivery plan.

  • More realistic programme planning: consider investigations, approvals, material lead times and site sequencing early.

Our approach in practice: a slip repair project

A client recently appointed CIVILCO on an ECI basis for a slip repair. Before we became involved, several other contractors had visited the site and asked the client to return once a design was completed so they could price it.

We offered a different starting point: become involved before the design is finalised and help shape the solution.

Under the agreed ECI scope, we briefed and coordinated the relevant consultants, brought the site’s construction constraints into the design process and reviewed the developing options for buildability and cost. The aim was to arrive at an efficient repair design with a clearer understanding of how it would be delivered and what it was likely to cost.

That is the difference our ECI service offers. Clients can come to CIVILCO for help developing the project, as well as for its construction.

When should you contact CIVILCO?

The best time is before you commission or finalise your structural design,

particularly for slip remediation, retaining walls, piling and foundations, earthworks or projects with difficult access and complex site conditions.

If you already have a concept or consultants involved, we can work alongside them and contribute as the design develops.

Planning a project? Talk to CIVILCO about Early Contractor Involvement before you finalise the design. We can help establish the next steps and bring engineering understanding, practical construction experience and budget awareness into the process from the start.
